High-level care for critically ill patients, focusing on constant monitoring, operating life-support, administering complex treatments, responding to emergencies, and providing crucial family support, all while maintaining meticulous records and adhering to strict infection control, requiring specialized post-basic qualifications and SANC registration. Key Responsibilities
- Patient Assessment & Monitoring: Continuously check vital signs, patient conditions, and early warning signs of deterioration.
- Emergency Response: Apply advanced life support during cardiac arrests or respiratory distress.
- Treatment & Medication: Administer medications, manage IV infusions (including titrating critical drips), and operate ventilators/cardiac monitors.
- Care Planning: Develop, implement, and modify patient care plans in collaboration with doctors and the multidisciplinary team.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate, detailed patient records as per hospital policy and legal requirements.
- Family Support: Educate families, provide emotional support, and facilitate communication.
- Infection Control: Strictly follow protocols to prevent infections.
- Equipment Management: Ensure complex medical equipment is functional and correctly used.
- Preventive Care: Participate in early detection and prevention of critical illness, potentially supporting general wards.
Essential Skills & Requirements- Qualifications: Diploma/Degree in Nursing with a recognized post-basic Critical Care Certificate.- Registration: Valid registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).- Skills: Critical thinking, crisis management, situational awareness, strong communication, detail orientation, and ability to work under pressure.
Work Environment- High-acuity, fast-paced setting.- Requires significant collaboration with doctors, therapists, and other nurses.- Involves shift work (days, nights, weekends).
